How To Dress Like Kate Hudson In Running Point

This dizzying wardrobe made us fall back in love with “work clothes.”

by The Candidly Team

Ugh, we thought our days of lusting after workwear were over. (See article after article of us declaring our love of “house clothes” for reference.)

But a little lady called Kate Hudson in a little show called Running Point just proved us so incredibly wrong.

And is this even really a surprise? Was Andie Anderson of How to Lose a Guy not the last make-believe person to have a work wardrobe we got weak over?

The thing about her clothes is that sure, they’re incredible if you’re a high-powered executive from a billionaire basketball dynasty. BUT … they are also amazing for us non-billionaire schmos who only really dress up to go out at night. And that’s because everything is so tailored, so luxe-looking, so fun, so feminine.

We couldn’t resist. We had to recreate all of it … and we did so by finding far more realistic versions of everything she wore.

Here’s how we made out:

1. THE COLORFUL SUITS

Kate’s suits were a visual spectacle. And yet … soooooo wearable at the same time. It completely rekindled our appreciation for the ease and chicness of a matching suit.

Suits are one of the few things that make us feel like we’re covered up and have room to breathe (not unlike our sweats) but they come off so sharp and tailored. Choosing colors that speak to us is a little trick to make it more exciting to wear a suit and feel like we’re still expressing our unique style.

That said, we’ll be frank. Because the fit and quality is so critical to a suit looking good, it’s hard to make one work going dirt cheap. But compared to Kate’s almost 3K ensembles, we’re pretty pleased with our choices which are a fraction of the cost:. Here is just a sampling of some of our favorite colors:

  • Pink: The color is called “ballet slippers” just to illustrate what a perfect pale pink it is.

  • Yellow: Ditto to this dreamy yellow we can see ourselves wearing as a neutral.

  • Red … and Blue: Sézane has a vast selection of gorgeous colors and spacious cut blazers to choose from. And choosing is damn near impossible.

  • Burnt Orange: A rich vest suit that fits like a dream for under $300.

2. THE STRIPES (… and GINGHAMS … AND HOUnDSTOOTHS)

The prints in this show are so unreal we gave them their own category. We’re big fans of stripes, ginghams, houndstooths, and plaids because they sort of defy trends. They’re neutral enough that we can wear them over and over without getting bored (which happens with some of the louder prints we own). And we’ll just come out and say it…

They look expensive even if we don’t have NBA-mogul money to spend on them.

Highlights include:

THIS jacket from Sézane. There is literally nothing like it.

THIS long striped coat which happens to be the exact one she wore on the show and happens to be from Favorite Daughter which we happen to have a 15% off code for. Use THECANDIDLY15.

THIS gorj gingham jacket is from a brand that will shock you. And yet, it’s the best one we’ve found.

THIS navy stripe vest looks equally excellent over a white tee as it does over a crisp button-down.

THIS cropped blazer. Do wear it with the matching high-waist striped pant if you want your waist nipped and your legs to look a mile and a half long.

3. THE TOPS

It is weirdly hard to find a non-boring top that fits us in a way we love. What’s kind of amazing about this collection is that every top is as flattering as it is stand-alone striking.

For example:

THIS is the spitting image of Kate’s sold-out half bodice, half button-down top that stole the show in our humble opinion. We may even love THIS one more. There’s also THIS stunning light color version that we instantly added to cart.

Her use of a fitted turtleneck with a sleek pencil skirt was pure artistry. This is our favorite LONG-SLEEVE VERSION, which we even wrote a whole article about HERE. And then there’s THIS 3/4 sleeve which covers the fleshiest part of our arms. Just an added bonus.

THIS black and white top is almost identical to the one Kate wore while cheering herself up in a Sephora. We recently did the exact same thing in an Ulta. Point is - we own this top, and it’s the first strapless top we’ve ever owned that we feel this comfortable in.

THIS flowy blouse is the kind of thing that makes your top into your whole look. So you can wear it with $50 jeans and not have to think about anything else.

And, of course, there are OH-SO-MANY beautiful, classic, white button-downs out there. But THIS hourglass-shaped one is a standalone that reminds us of Kate’s brilliant and original tailoring on the show.

4. THE VESTS

Vests are another item that have earned their own category, because the way Kate layers in Running Point is one of the keys to making her look impeccably put together and luxe. Tossed on alone or over a white button down, they nip the waist and make your entire outfit 27x more styled.

Favorites include:

THIS single shoulder version was almost impossible to track down and also works as an incredible going-out top.

The black and white print on THIS VEST looks incredible with black or white pants (or jeans!) It does all the work in making you look chic.

THIS classic, creamy, linen vest is incredible in warmer months.

THIS long version is unbelievable if you want a little extra tum coverage. With black pants, it’s show-stopping.

5. THE WORK SKIRTS AND DRESSES

Skirts and dresses are simultaneously the easiest things to throw on and go and know you look good and the hardest things to ever find.

The Skirts: Kate’s use of not-too-short pencil skirts reminded us how lovely they can look on our hips, butts, and legs IF we find the correct one. And we have.

It’s THIS stretchy version from J.Crew that comes in 4 colors and a great size range.

For a (faux) leather version, that’s shockingly easy to wear, we love THIS one from Modern Citizen.

The Dresses: As for the dresses, who knew button fronts were the key to making a work dress so much more lengthening and sophisticated?

We’re obsessed with THIS one Kate wore on the show.

THIS one is a staple, sleeveless version of her knit dress. We love that we can wear it with a blazer in fall/winter and on its own in spring/ summer and never have to let it collect dust in our closet.

6. THE FORMAL DRESSES

And now we reach the grand finale. The event dresses. We get it. She was an heir to an NBA franchise. But we left our binge session of Running Point, feeling deep in our hearts that we needed to find these dresses for ourselves.

Here’s how we made out:

First, we whipped up our own dream version of the black and white corset dress. We’ve loved THIS skirt from Anthropologie for ages. In fact, we already owned it in black and white. It goes all the way to the floor which makes us look 6ft tall. We added THIS not-expensive but very expensive-looking bodysuit and voila!

Next on our list was the red velvet dress that looked like it would melt over curves. We found the exact one Kate wore HERE. And we found this gorgeous alternate HERE. Both stun!

Finally, we have the white engagement dress. The original costs nearly $2k, so we were pretty pleased to locate THIS unbelievable, similar version for $200. It also comes in the exact YELLOW Andie Anderson famously wore 22 years ago in a dress moment that created a hole in our closet that haunts us to this day.

Needless to say, that hole might finally be filled. Along with 24 other holes singlehandedly created by allowing us to watch this show.

If you are our friends, you will keep us away from Netflix for the foreseeable future.
