Are Skirts Finally Good Again?
Sound the alarms!
by The Candidly Team
We are skirt people.
We’ll rephrase. We aspire to be skirt people.
Skirts are not these girly, impractical things. They’re the easiest, laziest way of looking put together. Any boring top in our closet paired with a skirt instead of pants is suddenly a look. And that doesn’t even factor in the fact that skirts can nip our waists, and float over hips, and flatter our butts in ways that make us feel deeply comfortable.
But for a long time, skirts have been either nonexistent (to the point that they don’t even get their own category on most clothing sites) or they’ve been bad. Boring. Ill-fitting. Bad.
But suddenly skirts are showing up again. Good skirts. Our favorite brands are making them. Website menus are displaying them.
We’ve been tracking this development verrrrry closely, and now we are very excited to share our favorite of all favorites. If you’ve been looking for a skirt, we swear it’s on this list.
1. The Pencil Skirt We’ve Been Waiting Yeeeears For
J.Crew Pencil Midi Skirt In Four-Season Stretch
We know in our hearts that a pencil skirt can be very chic, but we hate (HATE!) any feeling of stiffness or restriction. So up to now, we’ve pretty much opted out. But J.Crew is very good at making tailored pieces that have strettttch. Blazers and skirts we can actually move in but that don’t lose their clean, crisp cut. This skirt is unparalleled in this way. It comes in all the staple colors, but we feel very “quiet luxury” in white. Their blazer in this material is basically always sold out, so we’re moving quickly with this one. It also is on sale at this exact moment.
Price: $90
2. The Polka Dot Skirt That’s Gorj On Hips
Polka dots are one of those things people say are “trends” every other year that are actually classic and interesting and always in fashion. In other words, it’s a trend we’re actually willing to go for. Not to mention, this shape is a dream on thicker hips. Zoom in on the buttons in the side; they make us weak.
Price: $168
3. The Flattering Column Skirt For Those Who’d Rather Be Wearing Joggers
A column skirt is highly underrated for how flattering and elongating it is on every body shape. Plus, when you wear a more skimming skirt, you can do looser layers on top and still feel very polished and sleek. This skirt has the perfect shape but comes in soft cotton jersey and an elastic waist, so the comfort is unreal. Wear it with THESE elegant white sneaks, THIS $19 ribbed tank and an open button-down, and you’ll be shocked how sophisticated you look while feeling like you’re in house clothes.
Price: $59
4. The Only Pleated Skirt You Never Need To Own
This one is indeed a splurge, but if you wanted to own one flawless, Grace Kelly-esque skirt that would make you look effortlessly incredible, this is the one.
Price: $316
5. The Easy Linen Skirt That You’ll Never Stop Getting Compliments On
Again with that skimming, column shape. Gingham is such a hack for looking put together and elevated without much fuss. Wear it with any white tank or black tee. Keep it casj with a jean jacket or as a going outfit with a leather jacket. It’s foolproof.
Price: $55
6. The Only Knit Skirt You'll Ever Need
Quince Mongolian Cashmere Midi Skirt
This is an incredible price for cashmere but also one of the coziest, chicest skirts on this list. Wear it with a feathery white tee and ballet flats to feel like you’ve fully concealed the lazy slob who’d rather be in sweats. Comes in an annoying number of pretty colors.
Price: $100
7. The Poplin Skirt That Doesn’t Add Volume To Your Hips
Aritzia Babaton Chandelier Poplin Skirt
We love the idea of a staple circle skirt but so many make our hips look wider and our bellies more pronounced. This one has such a smart way of smoothing over curves with its wide waistband. It then floats out in the most complementary way that doesn’t add bulk. It’s the kind of skirt you can own in white and black and not really ever need to buy another midi skirt. (Don’t tell the other midi skirts on this list).
Price: $128
8. The Vegan Leather Skirt We Didn't Know We Needed
Modern Citizen Harley A-Line Vegan Leather Skirt
We didn’t think we were leather skirt people, but this A-line shape changed our minds. It’s easy to wear - not at all tight or intimidating but still reads very sleek and looks wildly luxe with all our cozy sweaters. It also sizes up to 1X and is machine washable. Wild, right?
Price: $148
9. The Striped Circle Skirt We Dream Of
Suzie Condo The Kyria Circle Skirt
Just in case you wanted a singular, striped, perfect, perfect poplin skirt that will make it so you never need another. That elastic waist is incredible at concealing a belly pooch, and the pockets are a thrill. Yes, it is another skirt that falls into the splurge category, but when we see perfection, we feel weird not to share. There are a dizzying number of stripe combos, so if you’re a stripe person, take a look.
Price: $375
10. The Most Elegant Dress Up Slip Skirt We'll Never Stop Writing About Because It's Perfect
By Anthropologie The Tilda Maxi Slip Skirt
We speak of this skirt A LOT a lot. The fact that it’s a maxi means we can wear it to work or to a black-tie event. The shape is stunning. You’ll be thrilled. And the color and size selection are excellent.
Price: $98
11. The Vacation Skirt
Z Supply Salerno Wrap Midi Skirt
One of our beefs with skirts is that so many fitted ones make us self-conscious while flare ones make us feel widened. This wrap skirt strikes the exact balance to be extremely flattering. It’s all we want to wear when we’re visiting somewhere warm.
Price: $89
12. The Bit Of Fun For The Originals Among Us
Maeve The Jacie Poplin Printed Midi Skirt by Maeve
What can we say? It just sparks joy. And fits amazing. But size down as it runs a little big.
Price: $148
13. The Single Most Flattering Slip Skirt
Aritzia Wilfred Devotion Skirt
This skirt sits right between fitted and loose, so it’s clean and sleek without being tight and challenging to wear. Bias cut is the only way to make a slip skirt look unbelievable on curves. If you’ve looked in a mirror and thought why does this skirt look so much better on me than the others I’ve tried on, it’s probably a slip skirt.
Price: $128
14. The Romantic Maxi Skirt
Modern Citizen Adé Smocked-Waist Maxi Skirt
We’ve long fantasized of owning that effortless maxi skirt we slip on after a beach day to head to a 3-course dinner looking devastatingly chic but such a skirt never seemed to exist. Before this one. The smocking is a gift for those of us who hate having a skinny waistband make our lower bellies puff out.
Price: $69
15. The Everyday Skirt We Require In Every Color
We wrote an entire article about this skirt after trying it on because it is the most comfortable, flattering full skirt of we’ve tried on as an adult. The front has a flat waistband to make it look mart but the back is elastic which makes us feel like we can breath. We own it in multiple colors. See photos HERE.
Price: $60
16. The Extra Chic Work Skirt
This is a very elegant play on a pencil skirt. Not too tight. Gorgeous with a silk button-down or a cropped sweater. We also wear it to dress up with a “going out top” because dresses are a nightmare in terms of fitting both our top and bottom halves.
Price: $138
